Do you need to clean your A/C system before summer?

An air conditioner failure in the hottest months of the year is awful. The increase of use during summer could overload your air conditioner’s capacity to function. Therefore, it’s crucial to clean the A/C system before summer. It is advised to have your air-conditioning system cleaned and checked out by a professional HVAC tech annually to mitigate issues before they cause a system failure or water damage.

Dust In The A/C System

An air conditioner can malfunction due to dust and dirt that bypass the air filter clogging the coils and other components. The air conditioner has to work harder and harder to pull air through. The decreased efficiency can mean the system has to run for longer periods of time (which may cost you more money), and the system can become overworked. This could lead to overheating and/or shorting out.

How Floods Happen

The air conditioner could also flood the drain pan due to a clogged condensate line. Air conditioners produce condensation as part of their normal operation. An air conditioner that is not running efficiently due to dirt buildup and/or worn parts has to run longer or non-stop to cool off the house. Condensate flows into the air handler’s pan and then out through the condensate line.

All of that dust buildup on the coils and components mixes with the condensation. Bacteria, germs, algae, and fungus thrive in the moisture. The organisms and debris attach to the porous PVC condensate line and grow until clogs form in the line. In this case, condensation flows backwards through the system and into the secondary drain pan underneath the air handler. If this pan overflows, the float-switch or shut-off switch (if present) would turn off your air conditioner. You must clear the clog before it can work again. If you don’t have such a switch, flooding can occur throughout the home or building. You could incur costly damage to floors, walls, or the ceiling.

How eTrapp Can Help

A condensation line that is clear of clogs

eTrapp solves the root problem of bacteria-laden condensate. The innovative condensate treatment system constantly treats condensate as it exits the air handler before it flows through the condensate line. eTrapp’s proprietary chemical blend kills bacteria, fungi, and algae. The cartridge also releases a gelling agent that coats the downstream line so that any debris cannot stick to the pipe.

Summer can be brutal to your home’s a/c system. Keep your system working as efficiently as possible by scheduling a routine cleaning and evaluation with your trusted local HVAC technician.
